Below is the final update from the Bennettsville, South Carolina mission team. Please pray for safe travels as they return home today.
The Canton, Ohio team departs tomorrow morning at 8:30 AM.
Grace Ministries served a record 63 families this morning with clothing, housewares, canned food, fresh vegetables from DeShong’s Giftback, and frozen meats. If you wonder what happens to all of the clothing left over from the rummage sale, here is your answer – it supports our Grace Ministry distributions throughout the year. Thank you to the many new and returning volunteers who made the day a success.
Bennettsville Final Update
For me [Jim Jochems] this has been one of the best mission trips I can remember. We have had a few firsts and some special moments and I hope that everyone hears all of the stories from everyone on the team for the next year until it’s time to come down to Bennettsville in 2015 and do it all over again. Can you believe Andy Anderegg has been down here each and every year (7 years total)?
On our final day in Bennettsville we added the screen door to the McCall house and finished up all of the screening on the porch. We also completed the drain, finished some touch up painting and added another handicap support bar to Ms. Bruce’s bathroom. At Ms. Claire’s house we painted the screen door added another door knob (so the screen door now fastens) and we painted her front door too. The day was capped off with a meal of fried fish and cole slaw hosted by the CDC. When we finished one last request we were all amazed that we had completed all of our jobs and that we had no more work left at 2 pm on Friday- in Bennettsville, wow!
One of the draws in coming down here is that there is a huge need. We talked to Ms. Dupre (head of the CDC) and they still have 115 applicants on their list. She also said there have another 200 applications pending. Ms. Dupre and Ms. Faye told us we were the only church to come down this year to work for them due to either budget constraints or other extenuating circumstances. So, once again we can say that we are proud that we are from Sterling United Methodist Church the one church that has lived up to a commitment for the past 7 years. And, we have our whole church to thank for the support, the prayers and the heart to enable us to come down here again.
