Operation Christmas Child at Sterling UMC

Operation Christmas Child at Sterling UMC

Once again this holiday season, Sterling UMC will participate with Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child shoebox program.

Starting this Sunday October 29, official Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes will be available for pickup in the church narthex (lobby) and will be available until National Collection week November 13-20.

Samaritan’s Purse was founded in 1970 by Bob Pierce and his mission for his organization was “to meet emergency needs in crisis areas through existing evangelical mission agencies and national churches.”

Franklin Graham has served as president and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse since 1979.

Sterling United Methodist Church has supported the Samaritan’s Purse shoebox program for many years and this past September the Sterling United Methodist Women hosted a presentation by Jennifer Colsey, the  local Operation Christmas Child contact.

Here are some tips from Shoebox Shoppers, a group with a Facebook Page that was started  to serve their church and their Operation Christmas Child shoebox ministry but has grown as people all around the world have joined and share their ideas, shopping finds and stories:

Here are the basic steps for packing a shoebox according to ministry guidelines:

1. Get an empty MEDIUM sized shoebox

2. Attach the appropriate boy/girl label, marking if your gift is for a boy or a girl. Select an age category 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14 and attach the label to the top of your shoebox.

3. FILL with Gifts—Select a quality “wow” toy such as a doll, soccer ball with pump, or stuffed animal. Then add other fun toys, hygiene items, and school supplies.

4. Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift. You can also include a personal note and photo.

5. Donate $9 online and receive a tracking label to Follow Your Box and discover the destination of your shoebox gift or you can include the $9 shipping inside.

You may pick up an official Operation Christmas Child shoebox at the church or you may use your own shoebox.  Your packed shoebox can be returned to the church during the collection week of November 13-20.
