GRACE Ministry, Backpack Buddies, and Lent

GRACE Ministry, Backpack Buddies, and Lent

The season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, this year on Valentine’s Day Wednesday, February 14!  Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word “lencten” which means “spring.” Lent lasts for 40 days, not counting Sundays, and ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday.  In Western Christianity, Easter Sunday must always fall on the next full moon after Spring Equinox.

Lent is a period of repentance and renewal. During this time we recall and relive the resurrection story to understand its meaning.  Christ’s death and resurrection, renews our lives giving us the power to renounce sin and death.

Our Ash Wednesday service will begin at 7 PM and this year.  On Ash Wednesday we confront our own mortality as we confess our sins before God. The use of ashes as a sign of mortality is a powerful way of participating in the call to repentance and reconciliation.

Come worship with us! We will have a meal of soup and salad before the service so come in and enjoy a period of fellowship before the service.

This weekend, February 9, 10, and 11 hosts two of Sterling UMC’s special mission efforts GRACE Ministry and Backpack Buddies.  GRACE Ministries is a food and clothing distribution supporting our local Sterling and surrounding communities.  You can help set up on Friday afternoon or help at the distribution from 7 AM to 11 AM (actual distribution 8 AM to 10 AM) on Saturday.

Donations are being received now for Backpack Buddies supporting kids at Rolling Ridge Elementary.  The packing of the “backpacks” will occur Sunday February 11 during our Growing Deeper at Ten hour.  Items currently needed for this weeks packing include:

250 Breakfasts (instant oatmeal for example).
100 Fruit cups.
150 Noodle or mac and cheese.
150 Canned meals with easy open lids
50 Juice boxes
50 Milks
Donations of these items can be left at the donation center in the Narthex (lobby) of the church.

We invite you to come and experience the joy of Jesus Christ in our worship, our Christian development, and our serving others in our community.

Sterling UMC is a community church and all are welcome to be our guest, attend our services and participate in our mission efforts.
