The season of Lent begins this week with Ash Wednesday, this year on Valentine’s Day Wednesday, February 14! Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word “lencten” which means “spring.” Lent lasts for 40 days, not counting Sundays, and ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday. In Western Christianity, Easter Sunday must always fall on the next full moon after Spring Equinox.
Lent is a period of repentance and renewal. During this time we recall and relive the resurrection story to understand its meaning. Christ’s death and resurrection, renews our lives giving us the power to renounce sin and death.
On Ash Wednesday we confront our own mortality as we confess our sins before God. The use of ashes as a sign of mortality is a powerful way of participating in the call to repentance and reconciliation.
Pastor Steve Vineyard begins his new sermon series “Listen” with the Ash Wednesday Service and will continue for the next five Sundays. The first sermon is titled Finding Your Life: Listening Deeply and the second in the series on Sunday February 18 is titled Finding Your Cave: Listening Spaces.
Come worship with us! Our Ash Wednesday service will begin at 7 PM and this year we will have a meal of soup and salad at 6 PM so come in and enjoy a period of fellowship before the service.
And if you can’t make our Ash Wednesday service at the church, Pastor Marcela Jarman will be taking ashes to the street in Sterling where she will be at Joe’s Pizzeria in Sterling Plaza, 22360 S Sterling Blvd # 103, Sterling, VA 20164 from 12 to 2 PM and from 5 to 8 PM. Stop by and visit with Pastor Marcela as she shares the love of Jesus and our Sterling community. Says Pastor Marcela, “Come enjoy a piece of pizza on us and learn why the sign of ashes on our forehead is a symbol of hope and love. Let’s talk, pray and learn together at Joe’s Pizzeria.”
And speaking of pizza next Sunday February 18 our Pizza Sunday returns following our 11 AM Contemporary Service. Come attend our 11 AM service with our Praise Band and stay afterward and enjoy a lunch in Gallihugh Hall (fellowship hall) of pizza and salad!
We invite you to come and experience the joy of Jesus Christ in our worship, our Christian development, and our serving others in our community.
Sterling UMC is a community church and all are welcome to be our guest, attend our services and participate in our mission efforts.
