Holy Week – Good Friday

Holy Week – Good Friday

According to the United Methodist Church:

The Friday before Easter on which the crucifixion of Jesus is remembered. Good Friday services focus upon prayer and reflection on the death of Christ and penance and special devotion for the believer.

The source of our term for the Friday before Easter, “Good Friday,” is not clear.  It may be a corruption of the English phrase “God’s Friday,” according to Professor Laurence Hull Stookey in Calendar: Christ’s Time for the Church (p. 96). It is the common name for the day among English- and Dutch-speaking people. It is a day that proclaims God’s purpose of loving and redeeming the world through the cross of our Lord, Jesus Christ. It is a day that is good because God was drawing the world to God’s self in Christ. As seen in John’s gospel, particularly, God was in control. God was not making the best of a bad situation but was working out God’s intention for the world — winning salvation for all people. We call it “good” because we look backward at the crucifixion through the lens of Easter!

On this Friday, Good Friday, March 30, we will remember Christ’s crucifixion in worship at 7 PM.

Easter Sunday will begin with a Sunrise Service at 6:30 AM outside (weather permitting) complete with fire.  Our outdoor service area is behind the playground and includes bench type seating and a fire pit.  You are welcome to bring your own chairs.

Immediately following the Sunrise Service, Sterling’s United Methodist Men will begin serving breakfast in our Gallihugh Fellowship Hall.  Breakfast will continue to be available until about 10:30 AM.

At 9 AM, worship will return to our sanctuary for a celebration of Christ’s resurrection with a service that will include communion.

The Amigos Spanish language Easter service will be at 10 AM in the sanctuary.

At 11 AM we will celebrate the resurrection once more with our Praise Band and a communion service in the sanctuary.

Also beginning at 7:30 AM photographer Abbie Hernley will be taking family photos or individual photos at the church continuing through the morning.  You can sign up for a spot or just walk up.  A love offering is being accepted and all proceeds are being donated to the Backpack Buddies Program providing weekend meals for kids at our local elementary school.

Please come and spend your Easter morning with us in Worship, enjoying breakfast, and capture your Easter memory in a photo.  You are also invited to bring cut flowers to decorate the cross near the entrance off the front parking lot.
