A Busy Week of Mission Efforts

A Busy Week of Mission Efforts

It was a great evening of fellowship last Monday when a lot of our church family turned out in support of our United Methodist Women (UMW) who held a fundraiser at Joe’s Pizzaria in Sterling Park.  Thanks to everyone who came out to relax, eat, and have some fun!  The funds support the UMW mission efforts locally and globally.

We had a big mission focus this past weekend with the GRACE Ministries program and Backpack Buddies.

Thanks to the many volunteers who assisted in the setup and distribution of food and clothing to over 70 local families through the GRACE program.  This monthly mission activity requires set up and staging that begins on Thursday evening continues all day Friday and into the evening for the two-hour distribution that occurs from 8 to 10 AM on Saturday morning.  Typical Saturday volunteer activity starts about 7 AM for signing in, until about 11:30 AM for clean up.

Then on Sunday morning during the Growing Deeper at 10 hour the packing for the Backpack Buddies took place in the Narthex (lobby).  Dawn Crowson, one of the volunteers who heads up the program had this to say:

Our Backpack Buddies packing during the SERVE hour last week had a GREAT turnout!  You helped pack 200 bags for Rolling Ridge Elementary school in less than an hour!  Thank you to those who helped beforehand with double bagging, counting, sorting, and setting up.  Thank you also to those who faithfully donate items each month!  We could not provide this food for our neighbors in need without your generosity!  Thank you also to those who packed bags, filled bins, carried bins, took away cardboard, delivered the bags and helped clean up.  Many hands make quick work and your hands are GREATLY appreciated!   Be on the look-out for what is NEEDED for May and June!  Thank you for supporting this important ministry!”

Donations for Backpack Buddies can be made at any time during the month at the donation center in the lobby.  Items that can be donated:

  • Shelf milk (non- refrigerated, single serving)
  • Cereal or Oatmeal, single servings
  • Fruit or Applesauce single cups
  • Snacks (crackers, granola bars, fruit snacks)
  • Canned meals (cans with pop-tops) or Ramen Noodles
  • Juice Boxes (no pouches)

Donations of clothing or diapers can also be made for GRACE Ministries at any time during the month.

GRACE Ministries occurs on the second Saturday of each month.  Backpack Buddies occurs on the Sunday following the GRACE Distribution during the school year which means only two more months remain, May and June, before the break until the new school year in September.

Also last week, Don and Donna Meyer made the trip to the Appalachia region and the Red Bird Mission area in southeastern Kentucky with a truckload of supplies.  They left Monday morning and were back in time to help out with GRACE Ministries on Saturday.  For more information on Redbird Missions click here.

Sterling UMC is a community church and all are welcome to be our guest, attend our services and support our mission efforts.  Please visit our website often for updates.  To subscribe to our weekly email newsletter please send your email contact information to
