Wrapping Up Sterling UMC’s Operation Christmas Child 2017

Wrapping Up Sterling UMC’s Operation Christmas Child 2017

Last week members of Sterling UMC and the Sterling UMC United Methodist Women wrapped up the program for 2017 by volunteering at the local processing center near Baltimore.

Though millions of shoeboxes are collected during National Collection Week, before these special gifts can bring hope and joy to children around the world, each one has to be carefully inspected and made ready for overseas shipment by volunteers.

Operation Christmas Child has eight processing centers across the United States. About 80,000 volunteers serve annually at these processing centers. The closest to us, the Baltimore/Washington center is located in Columbia Maryland.  Two days last week, teams from Sterling UMC made the trip up to Columbia to help with the preparation.  Eleven volunteers, four on Wednesday and seven on Friday contributed their time to help wrap up Operation Christmas Child for 2017.

According to our UMW volunteers, “a child may only receive one box during their young years as locations of and in countries change each year. It is our understanding that this year children of Native Americans on reservations and Alaskan natives will be receiving Christmas boxes.”

It is estimated that approximately 150 boxes were processed through Sterling UMC and delivered either to the collection center or the processing center.

Samaritan’s Purse was founded in 1970 by Bob Pierce and his mission for his organization was “to meet emergency needs in crisis areas through existing evangelical mission agencies and national churches.”

Franklin Graham has served as president and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse since 1979.

Sterling United Methodist Church has been a supporter of the Samaritan’s Purse shoebox program for many years.  Thanks to all who participated in donating boxes and those that volunteered to deliver and process the boxes.

Sterling United Methodist Church is a community church serving the Sterling community and its neighbors.  All are welcome to worship with us and participate in our ministries.  Please be our guest on Sunday mornings!

Questions God Asks Us.   Transformation comes from questions, not answers. We instinctively ask questions in the face of the things in life we cannot explain.  The Bible can be seen as a book of questions from God to us.  Our answers to His questions will draw us into a relationship of deeper intimacy with God.… Continue Reading
