Becoming a Member
If you live in our community, we welcome your membership in Sterling United Methodist Church. We believe you will find SUMC to be a congregation of warm and caring people with whom you can share the Christian journey. You may join Sterling UMC in one of several ways:
By Profession of Faith and Baptism
If you have not been baptized and you would like to confess Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, our Pastor will be glad to discuss this decision with you at your convenience.
If you have been baptized, but you have never had membership in the Church, you may be confirmed as a full member, professing your faith in Jesus Christ.
By Transfer from Another United Methodist Church
If you are currently a member of another United Methodist Congregation you may simply transfer your membership to Sterling UMC. Please contact our Pastor or the church office for more information. It is not necessary for you to write your former church. Sterling UMC will handle the details of transfer for you.
By Transfer from Another Christian Denomination
This process is very much like the one above. Since you have already been baptized and confirmed, these steps will not be repeated. You will be asked to take the one vow taken by all members of the United Methodist Church: Will you be loyal to the United Methodist Church and uphold it with your prayers, your presence, your gifts, and your service?
Once the appropriate above steps are taken you will then be presented before the congregation in one of our worship services and your membership decision affirmed and celebrated. Each time a new member is added to our church family it is an opportunity for everyone to also reaffirm their membership vows.
Our Expectations for Members is for you to:
- Attend worship every week unless you are out of town.
- Pursue at least one means of growing in your faith in addition to the weekly worship service.
- Serve in one area in the church at least once every year.
- Grow toward the tithe, giving in proportion to your income.
Our Commitment to our Members
We are committed to supporting and encouraging your growth as a member by providing opportunities for you to:
- Grow in grace, knowledge, and understanding of God through the Word, prayer, fellowship, and worship.
- Sharpen your leadership skills through classes, workshops, and hands-on experience.
- Serve God in a ministry where you are able to use your spiritual gifts to make significant contributions to the mission and vision of the church.
