Ash Wednesday, the Season of Lent Begins
Ash Wednesday, February 26, marks the beginning of the season of Lent.
Lent lasts for forty days, not counting the Sundays, and ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter.
During this period of repentance and renewal, we recall and relive the resurrection story to understand the meaning of Christ’s death and resurrection that gave us the power to renounce sin and death.
On Ash Wednesday we confess our sins before God and confront our own mortality using ashes to remind us.
If you would like to receive ashes on Ash Wednesday, Sterling UMC is providing two opportunities. Pastor Marcela Jarman will be hosting an “Ashes to Go” time in the church lobby where you can stop by and receive your ashes, have a cup of coffee, hang out a little or just head off to your next stop. “Ashes to Go” will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
In the evening Sterling UMC will provide a simple meal of grilled cheese, chicken noodle soup, tomato soup, and salad at 6:00 p.m. in the Gallihugh Fellowship Hall. An Ash Wednesday service will follow the meal at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. All are invited to attend the meal and the service.
Sterling UMC is a community church and all are welcome to be our guest, attend our services and support our mission efforts. For updates on upcoming events, activities and services subscribe to our weekly newsletter.
