Backpack Buddies, Because Hunger Doesn’t End On Friday
The BackPack Buddies is a national program designed to provide children from low-income households with nutritious kid-friendly groceries for the weekend when free school lunches and breakfasts are not provided. School officials identify students who qualify to receive BackPack Buddies. The Sterling United Methodist Church Backpack Buddies program supports the kids at the local Rolling Ridge Elementary school in Sterling.
The final Backpack Buddies packing for this school year will be this Sunday, June 10 during our Growing Deeper discipleship hour at 10 AM and will be set up in the narthex (lobby). An additional 100 “backpacks” will be assembled over the normal 200 to provide a little extra for the summer months. The extra 100 “backpacks” means additional supplies are needed this week!
Donations can be brought to the church and left at the donation center in the lobby. Visit the office if you have questions. The current needs for packing are:
100 noodles/ramen/mac & cheese cups single cups
190 cereal boxes, single serving
250 oatmeal, single serving
200 snacks (crackers, granola bars,
220 canned meals (cans with pop tops)
230 juice boxes (no pouches)
No milk is needed!
This weekend we will also host our monthly GRACE Ministry clothing and food distribution. Friday, volunteers will set up for the Saturday morning distribution. If you are interested in helping, set up starts about 4 PM on Friday and lasts into the early evening so any time after that you can jump in and help. On Saturday volunteers are needed at 8 AM for the distribution until about 11 AM when clean up ends.
Thanks to all those who helped assemble the bags during last Sunday’s 10 AM hour to be used this week for GRACE and Backpack Buddies.
