Backpack Buddies for the New School Year Begins August 18
According to Feeding America’s website, twenty-two million children receive free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program and the National School Breakfast Program. For many of these children, school meals may be the only meals they eat.
As a result, fifteen or so years ago, Feeding America started their BackPack Program to help make sure some of those twenty-two million children had meals for the weekends as well.
Here in Loudoun County it is estimated that 1 in 4 school children are unsure of where their next meal will come from. Organizations like the Backpack Buddies Foundation of Loudoun and many local churches including Sterling United Methodist Church support this effort by providing a “backpack” of food that will feed a child over a weekend.
Sterling UMC’s Backpack Buddies program is a monthly mission effort and the first packing for the new 2019-2020 school year will be on Sunday, August 18 during the 10 AM SERVE activity. Sterling UMC’s program supports children at our local Rolling Ridge Elementary School. The program is managed by members of the Mission Team and supported by donations of food items.
Items needed for this month’s packing are:
- 300 canned meals with pop tops
- 300 mac n cheese OR ramen noodles
- 300 individual fruit cups OR applesauce
- 300 individual cereal boxes OR pop tarts
- 300 individual oatmeal packets
- 300 snacks (cookies, crackers, chips, granola bars OR fruit snacks)
Please note that milk or juice boxes, normally required as well, are not needed this month.
Donations can be dropped at the donation center in the Narthex (lobby) or the church office. Donations for this packing should be delivered to the church by August 15th. Financial donations can also be made to Sterling United Methodist Church by indicating Backpack Buddies on your check.
If you are worshipping with us on Sunday, August 18 please join the line and help pack a backpack for a hungry child living right here in our neighborhood.
Sterling UMC is a community church and all are welcome to be our guest, attend our services and support our mission efforts. For updates on upcoming events, activities and services subscribe to our weekly newsletter!
