This October, churches across the nation are celebrating Pastor Appreciation Month. Every year Pastor Appreciation Day, aka Clergy Appreciation Day, occurs on the second Sunday of the month. This is a day and a month set aside to celebrate the contributions of pastors, priests, reverends and ministers across the United States.
It has been proposed that Paul began the concept of clergy appreciation in 1 Timothy 5:17 and also in 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 when he stated that “the elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those who work is preaching and teaching” and “now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you…” It was based on these scriptural references that in 1992 Clergy Appreciation Month was established by pastors and religious workers and would eventually be changed to Pastor Appreciation Month.
The United Methodist Church says that while the congregation or the laypeople are the hands and the feet of the church, the pastor is the heart of the body. And while their pastoral responsibilities may include administrative duties, they are also on the job 24/7 preaching, teaching, visiting the sick and most importantly, praying.
Please take some time this month to thank Pastor Linda, Pastor Marcela as well as all the clergy in your life and join us in saying a prayer for them:
We pray today in celebration to show our appreciation for the clergy of Sterling United Methodist Church and all those serving your churches. We thank you for the variety of gifts brought to us by Pastor Steve and Pastor Marcela. We are grateful for the leadership they provide. May this time of acknowledgement let our pastors know how much we appreciate the sacrifices, the long hours and the untold acts of love they have given to us.
Please continue to strengthen their ministries among us.
All this we pray in Jesus’ name,
