What is the “Million Dollar Quartet?” This 2010 Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning musical dramatizes the now-famous 1956 impromptu recording session at Memphis-based Sun Record Studio during which early rock and roll starts Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis met and jammed “just for fun.” On December 4, Carl Perkins was scheduled to record some songs with a new performer, Jerry Lee Lewis. Unexpectedly, Elvis Presley happens to stop by the studio along with his girlfriend, a singer named Dyanne. Remarkably, Johnny Cash also stops by to talk to recording impresario Sam Philips. The four musicians soon begin talking and singing together. On the outside chance that something great (and lucrative) might come out of the session, Philips flips the switch on the studio recorder—and the rest is rock and roll history. Hit songs include Blue Suede Shoes, Folsom Prison Blues, Great Balls of Fire, Hound Dog, See You Later Alligator and many others.
