Sound The Alarm in Sterling
Last month the American Red Cross launched a program known as Sound the Alarm which is a home fire safety effort with a goal to install 100,000 free smoke alarms across the country. “Smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half,” said Gail McGovern, President and CEO of the American Red Cross. “Every day across this country, home fires threaten families—but working smoke alarms can be the difference between survival and tragedy. Today, we are asking for everyone’s support to help us Sound the Alarm by donating or volunteering so that we can provide lifesaving services for people vulnerable to these crises.”
On Saturday, May 18, through the combined efforts of the Sterling United Methodist Church, the Loudoun County Fire Department, and the Red Cross; Sound the Alarm will be working right here in our Sterling Park community.
On that day from 9:00am to 2:00pm, volunteers from these organizations and the community will go door to door installing free smoke alarms, changing batteries, and helping families create escape plans.
Since this program started in 2014 it is estimated that 582 lives have been saved across the country by the installation of the more than 1.6 million free smoke alarms and other safety interventions.
If you would like to volunteer to help you can do so by visiting SoundTheAlarm.org and clicking “search now” under Volunteer, enter zip code 20164 then choose the Sterling event on May 18. Volunteers must sign up on the Red Cross Sound The Alarm webpage to participate. Volunteers should meet at the Sterling United Methodist Church located at 304 E. Church Road for training at 8 AM. Participants who are bi-lingual may be especially helpful.
